Stray cats cared for by Asociación Miauuu Gatos near San Pedro del Pinatar, Spain.

They Don’t Have a Shelter. What They Do Have Is Huge Hearts. Meet Asociación Miauuu Gatos ❤️

They don’t have a shelter, regular grants or the resources of a large organisation. What they do have is an incredible determination to help stray and abandoned cats every single day.

Asociación Miauuu Gatos operates in the San Pedro del Pinatar area of Spain. Izabela, Juan and a team of dedicated volunteers run the association and give their time and energy to helping animals in need. We have also decided to support their work and want to show you why this help is so desperately needed.

Helping Cats Where They Need It Most

Asociación Miauuu Gatos does not run a traditional animal shelter where people can simply bring a cat and leave it in their care. Instead, the volunteers go where cats need them most – out on the streets and among stray cat colonies.

They provide food, rescue sick and injured cats, arrange veterinary appointments, organise treatment, and carry out spaying and neutering. The volunteers also help abandoned kittens, arrange foster homes, socialise cats and find responsible adoptive families.

Their work involves far more than putting food in a bowl. It also includes transporting cats to veterinary clinics, arranging tests, paying for medication and surgery, and providing ongoing care. All of this takes time, dedication and, above all, money.

Caring for Around 52 Cats

At the moment, the association cares for around 52 cats, including two mother cats with their kittens and several cats living with FIV. Every one of them needs food and daily care, while some also require specialised veterinary treatment.

Veterinary Care Is a Major Expense

Veterinary care is one of the association’s biggest expenses. A stray cat may need examinations, medication, antibiotics, surgery, hospitalisation or long-term treatment. Spaying and neutering also play an important role, as they help control the number of stray cats and prevent more kittens from being born into difficult and often dangerous conditions.

Every veterinary visit, procedure and prescription costs money, and the association has no reliable source of institutional funding.

The Cats Behind the Story

Behind these expenses are real animals with real stories.

Mapache underwent surgery to remove a tumour from his mouth. He later developed panleukopenia, a serious viral disease, and spent 14 days in hospital. He survived, although he was left with coordination and balance problems. Today, he is doing well.

Brian weighed just 740 grams when someone abandoned him near one of the cat colonies. He was in a life-threatening condition. Volunteers treated him for three weeks before placing him in foster care. He eventually found a loving family and is now healthy and safe.

Rubio suffered from kidney problems, anaemia and a severe infection in his mouth. He needed surgery, and the veterinary team removed all but two of his teeth. Today, he is doing well and has adapted to life without most of his teeth.

Two tiny kittens also needed urgent help. Someone threw one into a rubbish bin, while someone found the other in the bushes. Both suffered from eye infections, cat flu, fever and dehydration. After volunteers rescued and treated them, both found loving adoptive homes.

Fiona weighed just 700 grams. She was severely malnourished and seriously ill when the association took her in. Tests confirmed that she had panleukopenia. Despite a week of intensive treatment and a desperate fight for her life, the volunteers could not save her. 💔

Garfield escaped from his adoptive home less than 24 hours after his adoption. For six days, volunteers searched for him day and night in an unfamiliar area. Eventually, they found him. Garfield then returned to the association’s care, partly because he is FIV-positive.

These are just a few of the many cats Asociación Miauuu Gatos has helped. Not every story has a happy ending, but every animal deserves a chance.

Why Financial Donations Matter

This is why financial donations are so important. Food, bowls, blankets and towels are essential, but they cannot cover veterinary examinations, medication, hospital stays, surgery, spaying or neutering.

You cannot pay a veterinary bill with a bag of cat food. You cannot pay for medication with a blanket.

Financial donations help the association pay for treatment and respond when another sick or injured cat urgently needs help.

How You Can Help Locally

Donations of physical items are also incredibly valuable. The association particularly needs wet food for cats and kittens, as well as bowls, blankets, towels and other items used in everyday animal care.

We would especially like to appeal to people living in the La Zenia area and nearby towns. If you are clearing out your home or apartment and have blankets or towels that you no longer need but are still in good condition, please consider donating them instead of throwing them away.

Simply contact Asociación Miauuu Gatos, let them know what you have available and where it is located, and arrange a convenient collection time.

Supporting a Registered Association

The association has also shown us its registration document as confirmation of its legal registration. We are not publishing the document in full because it contains personal and address details.

We are also doing our part. We buy and donate food, blankets, towels and other supplies, and we support the fundraising efforts. But we would like to do more by reaching people who may also be able to help.

You can also donate food, blankets, towels or bowls, or simply share this article with others.

Not everyone can spend their time rescuing a stray cat or provide a foster home. But everyone can do something small: make a donation, give a tin of food, donate a blanket or a few towels.

What may seem like a small gesture to us can make a real difference to the association. It could help pay for another veterinary examination, medication, a spay or neuter, or give another cat the chance to receive the help it desperately needs.

They don’t have a shelter or regular funding. What they do have is huge hearts, and every day they help cats who have no way of asking for help themselves.

We are already doing our part. Now we invite you to join us. Together, we can give more cats a chance at a safer and better life. ❤️
