El Cau de Elche

El Cau de Elche – a hidden sculpture gallery in the heart of Costa Blanca

If you think Costa Blanca is all about beaches, palm trees, and promenades full of tourists, El Cau de Elche will surprise you like few other places. It is one of the most extraordinary attractions in the area – a hidden, open-air sculpture gallery carved into the rocks on the slope of an old quarry. The place has a mysterious, slightly wild feel, yet is full of passion and history.

The entire project was created by local artist Mariano Ros, who spent years carving scenes, figures, and symbols related to Elche into the stone. Today, you can see over 100 sculptures – from motifs connected to the city’s history, to realistic figures, and imaginative ornaments that look as if they came straight from mythical stories.

Walking through El Cau feels a bit like strolling through an art open-air museum, and a bit like exploring a forgotten mountain path. There are no ticket offices, gates, or crowds. It’s just us, nature, silence, and towering stone walls covered in carved symbols.

You can easily combine a visit to El Cau de Elche with trips to nearby attractions. Cuevas del Canelobre is just 46 km away, perfect for exploring impressive caves, and Carmen del Campillo is only 29 km away, ideal for enjoying beautiful gardens. This makes for a full day of culture, nature, and unique experiences in Costa Blanca.

<br>What to expect during your visit

After parking at the Mariano Ros parking lot, you’ll face about a 10-minute gentle walk along a rocky path. Along the way, the first reliefs in the rock start to appear, and when you reach the top, you’ll arrive at the central “sculpture garden,” where the stone walls look like giant canvases covered in art.

It’s worth bringing water, comfortable shoes, and a camera. If visiting in summer, the best times are early morning or late afternoon, when the hills around Elche are beautifully lit.
